What is IB?
International Baccalaureate is a framework for teaching the core curriculum. It focuses on teaching students to be life-long learners. It also encourages students to become internationally minded which means recognizing a common humanity and creating a better and more peaceful world. IB teaches students to develop a love for learning and how to find answers to their own questions, to do their own research and to "dig" deeper into classroom subjects. IB is very hands on and does not have a lot of worksheets and "busy work".
As an IB school our goal is to develop lifelong learners; learners who are motivated to discover new things and be a positive force in their families and communities. To that end, the Learner Profile is our over-all goal. During each IB unit we will focus on two components of the learner profile and students will reflect each day on what they did to help them develop into this type of learner.
The IB program focuses on the Learner Profile which has 10 attributes:
There are 5 Essential Elements of the IB program that support the learner profile. These are:
Action
Skills
Attitudes
Concepts
Knowledge
There is more to understand with each of these but I just want to quickly touch on Attitudes. There are 12 Attitudes that help the students build their Learner Profile (and the attributes which go with). They are:
Appreciation Empathy
Commitment Enthusiasm
Confidence Independence
Cooperation Integrity
Creativity Respect
Curiosity Tolerance
There are 6 Trans-Disciplinary themes that are taught each school:
Who We Are
Where We Are In Place and Time
How We Express Ourselves
How the World Works
How We Organize Ourselves
How We Share the Planet
The concepts within these themes change depending on the grade level. The core curriculum fits within each of these units. As a school, we also make sure everything is aligned, uniform, and works together not only across grade level, but throughout the grades.
